A unique eco-museum in France
The Marquèze Ecomuseum was created in 1969 by the Landes de Gascogne Regional Natural Park. It is one of the very first ecomuseums in France. Its mission is to preserve, study and transmit the heritage of the Grande Lande by reconstructing the living environment of its inhabitants in the 19th century.
150 years ago, this original society of shepherd-farmers was in such symbiosis with its environment that it disappeared when the moor gave way to the forest. Marquèze tells the story of this unique link between a society and its environment, its economic, cultural and social consequences in one of the largest open-air museums in France.
Castles
In the South Gironde stand five sublime castles called "Clementines", named after Pope Clement V who built them at the beginning of the 14th century. These perfectly preserved fortresses offer a beautiful historical getaway.
The Château de LA BREDE has retained its appearance of a medieval fortress and is reflected in the water of wide moats. The interior discovery leads the visitor in the footsteps of the writer through the emblematic places where he worked, including his library and his bedroom preserved in its 18th century state. The visit of the chapel, dining room and lounges reveals the wealth of collections and furniture gathered by the family over time. At the heart of a wooded estate, Montesquieu structured a large regular garden composed of a grove with paths forming a star network.
